The 77th All India Invitational Prize Money Independence Day Cup Football Tournament 2025, organized by the Nowgong Sports Association, kicked off in grand style today, November 9, at the iconic Nurul Amin Stadium, heralding the start of an exciting football spectacle.
In the opening match, Trinayan Goshti of Nagaon defeated Kacha of Diphu by 2–0 goals, securing their place in the pre-quarterfinal round.
In a thrilling match, Trinayan Goshti's Paikhomba Meitei scored in the 45th minute, giving his team a 1–0 lead. After the break, the Kacha team made several attempts to equalize but failed to break through the opponent's strong defense. In the final moments of the game, Trinayan's Dibyajyoti Bordoloi scored another goal through a well-coordinated attack, ensuring his team's victory by 2–0.
During the opening ceremony, the president of the Sports Association, Rupak Sarmah, highlighted the progress made in the district's sports sector. The association's secretary, Tapan Kumar Das, delivered the welcome address. The tournament was officially inaugurated by Swadhin Deka Raja, a former international football player.
In his speech, he grew emotional as he recalled his fond memories of playing on this very field in the past. He also paid tribute to the Late Nurul Amin, expressing gratitude by saying that it was because of Nurul Amin's contributions that he got the opportunity to play in the Santosh Trophy three times.
At today's event, sixty veteran players and organizers—both men and women above the age of sixty—were also felicitated for their contributions to sports in the district.
