Nowgong Sports Association
Along with other districts of Assam, State Sports Day was observed in Nagaon on September 3 to commemorate the 86th birth anniversary of Arjuna Awardee Bhogeswar Baruah, the first sportsperson from Assam and the Northeast to receive the prestigious award.
The programme was organised by the Nowgong Sports Association at the Nurul Amin Stadium. Following the hoisting of the association’s flag, an 800-metre race for men and women was held at 3:30 p.m.
The competition was formally inaugurated by noted social worker Jyoti Goswami. In the men’s category, 30 athletes participated, with Pankaj Bora securing first place, Ritu Das finishing second and Kajirul Islam taking third place.
In the women’s category, 20 athletes competed, with Debashree Saikia emerging as the winner, followed by Sharifa Kausar in second place and Priya Konwar in third.
At the conclusion of the event, Nowgong Sports Association president and MLA Rupak Sarma cut a cake to mark Bhogeswar Baruah’s birthday and extended his greetings. Association general secretary Tapan Kumar Das also highlighted Baruah’s life, achievements and significant contribution to Indian athletics and sports.
