The 16th All Assam Inter-District Senior Men’s Hockey Championship, organised under the aegis of Hockey Assam and hosted by the Nowgong Sports Association, got underway at Nurul Amin Stadium, Nagaon, on 11th September 2026. The five-day championship features a total of 23 district teams affiliated with Hockey Assam.
The championship was formally inaugurated on Friday at 3:30 PM by the Chief Guest, Om Prakash Meena, Youth Officer, MY Bharat Kendra, Nagaon District. The inaugural ceremony was conducted by Tapan Kumar Das, President of Hockey Assam and General Secretary of the Nowgong Sports Association.
The ceremony was attended by Ujjal Baruah, Joint Secretary of the Assam Olympic Association; Mohan Chandra Bora, Senior Vice-President of Hockey Assam; Pratim Barua, District Sports Officer, Nagaon; distinguished sports organisers Hiranya Bora, Kalyani Deka and Koel Ray Choudhury; Asim Kumar Bhowal, Samir Hazarika, Sanjay Kumar Mahato, Azharuddin Ahmed, Nurijyoti Baruah, Tanuja Siddiqui Khan, Rinky Chauhan and Nasiruddin Ahmed, among others.
The inaugural programme began with an impressive march-past by the participating district teams, led by hockey player Sabita Kumari. Following the march-past, the Chief Guest and other distinguished guests were introduced to the participating players.
On the opening day, Darang defeated Biswanath 5–2, Karimganj beat Lakhimpur 4–0, West Karbi Anglong defeated Tezpur 5–1, Kamrup Rural beat Mazbat 7–1, Udalguri defeated Silchar 7–0, while Makum edged past Sivasagar 4–3 in a closely contested encounter to advance to the next round.
During the inaugural ceremony, Tanuja Siddiqui Khan, a former Sivasagar hockey player, felicitated Tapan Kumar Das, President of Hockey Assam, with a special gesture of honour.
The championship will continue until 15th September 2026. The matches are being officiated by hockey officials under the guidance of Hockey Assam Technical Director Mohan Chandra Bora, with Samir Hazarika and Hiranya Gogoi serving as the Tournament Technical Coordinators.
According to Tapan Kumar Das, President of Hockey Assam, and Kalyani Deka, Secretary of Hockey Assam, a participation grant of Rs. 5,000 has been sanctioned through bank cheques to each participating district team. This marks the first time in the history of Hockey Assam that such a participation grant has been provided to district teams.
